JDM Lure Technique from Japan #15: Light Free Rig Sinker Selection with Yuzo Ishida

This time, we would like to introduce a follow-up report from Lake Biwa guide Yuzo Ishida about the Light Free Rig.
Yuzo Ishida is a fishing guide on Lake Biwa, one of Japan’s most famous bass fishing fields. In a previous report, he introduced the Light Free Rig as one of his key techniques for fishing rock areas, reefs, weeds, and other types of structure on Lake Biwa.
This time, he explains how he selects sinker weight for the Light Free Rig.
For this technique, Ishida mainly uses four sinker weights:
1.8g
2.5g
3.5g
5g
His standard weight is 3.5g.
From there, he changes the weight depending on the situation.
According to Ishida, there are three main factors when choosing the sinker weight:
Wind strength
Rod power
How snaggy the area is
If the wind is strong, a slightly heavier sinker may be needed for casting distance, line control, and bottom contact.
If the rod is softer, a lighter sinker may match the tackle better.
If the area has many rocks, reefs, weeds, or snaggy structure, using a lighter sinker can help reduce snags.
The origin of the Light Free Rig was very simple.
Ishida originally started making the sinker lighter in order to reduce snags.
However, making the sinker lighter also created disadvantages.
The rig became harder to cast.
Casting distance became shorter.
It also became more difficult to control the rig, especially in wind or deeper water.
After testing different weights and tackle balance, Ishida arrived at what he now calls the Light Free Rig.
As he continued using the technique, he also discovered several other advantages.
The Light Free Rig has strong bite-triggering ability.
The first fall becomes slower and more natural.
It picks up less debris from the bottom.
It also gets caught in weeds less easily.
Because the rig comes through weeds and structure more cleanly, bites become easier to feel.
This is an important point.
The Light Free Rig is not simply a normal Free Rig with a lighter sinker.
It is a balanced technique designed to reduce snags, improve presentation, and make the bait easier for bass to bite.
For a field like Lake Biwa, where anglers often fish rocks, reefs, deep water, weeds, and offshore structure, this balance is very important.
Ishida also says that one of his future goals is to design a soft bait made specifically for the Light Free Rig.
For anglers outside Japan, this is a good example of how Japanese bass anglers refine a standard rig into a more precise technique for specific field conditions.
