BlueBlue’s OUTSTAR 120S is a sinking pencil designed to achieve two seemingly conflicting performance characteristics: long-distance casting and a slow retrieve near the surface. It was developed for situations where heavier lures do not match the desired depth or speed, while lighter lures that can be worked near the surface lack casting distance. It measures 120 mm in length, weighs 20 g, and is designed to run at a depth of 20–30 cm.
The body contains six weight balls and features a magnetic weight-transfer system in which all six balls move. During the cast, the weights shift toward the rear to stabilize the lure’s flight, delivering casting distance that is difficult to imagine from a 20 g body. After splashdown, it swims lightly near the surface and is designed to maintain a shallow running depth even on a slow retrieve. With a standard steady retrieve, it can be used to slowly search shallow offshore areas and distant surface water.
When rod action is added, the six weight balls are designed to break free, triggering a panic-dart action that resembles a small baitfish fleeing in confusion. When fish are unresponsive to a constant-speed retrieve, twitches can be incorporated to vary the presentation. It comes standard with two #5 hooks and #3 split rings, making it well suited for situations that require long casts in rivers or tidal flats, as well as slowly targeting surface water offshore.
