Maria’s FLAPEN BLUERUNNER is a flap pencil lure for targeting bluefish, designed around the concept of reproducing the rearward water disturbance created by fleeing baitfish. It features a foldable resistance plate called a “flap” at the rear of the sinking pencil lure. During the cast, the flap folds away to stabilize the lure’s flight. After landing, it opens to catch water, reducing the lack of resistance often associated with sinking pencils and transmitting the lure’s action back to the angler during the retrieve.

At moderate retrieve speeds, it produces a rolling action that generates the rearward water disturbance of a baitfish. On a fast retrieve, it can also be used for buzzing across the surface, wobbling as it moves with a wake and splashes. During the fall, it maintains a horizontal posture and sinks with a rolling action. The S85 is an 85 mm, 28 g model that traces depths from just below the surface to approximately 100 cm, making it suitable for light shore plugging with seabass tackle. The S115 measures 115 mm and weighs 38 g, with a diving depth of approximately 50 cm. At a moderate retrieve speed, it can target the zone from just below the surface to around 50 cm, while a fast retrieve allows for surface-oriented presentations. The standard hook sizes are #4 for the S85 and #2 for the S115, with #3 and #5 rings, respectively. The basic technique is a steady retrieve, adjusting the retrieve speed according to the target depth and the desired surface appeal.
