Smith Mebapen

Smith’s MEBAPEN MEBARU is a horizontally floating pencil bait developed to draw surface-oriented mebaru up to the water’s surface. Designed to drift with the current, it features a floating posture that naturally sways in the wind and waves. Its body shape, inspired by a small squid, incorporates fins and large eyes, details reflected not only in its appearance but also in its action. Measuring 45 mm and weighing 3 g, this floating lure is designed for stable flight and makes it easier to achieve casting distance compared with topwater plugs of a similar size.

On a straight retrieve, it meanders in an S-shaped motion while leaving a subtle wake on the surface. With rod work, the tail fin acts like a horizontal wing, causing the lure to slide from side to side. The width of its movement can be adjusted by varying the intensity of the twitches, while shaking allows for an enticing presentation with minimal forward movement. The basic techniques are a natural drift carried by the current, adding small twitches or shakes during the drift, and a slow retrieve. When it is difficult to draw a response on the surface, it can also be made to dive with a single twitch after landing, then retrieved steadily beneath the surface.
