United States Orders – Customs Duties and Handling Fee

Effective November 6, 2025, 11:00 AM (Japan Standard Time), all orders shipped to the United States will be subject to a 15% customs handling fee.

This fee is charged because the United States government eliminated the de minimis exemption (previously duty-free under USD 800) effective August 29, 2025, which now requires all imports to the US to be subject to customs duties and taxes.

Our store will pay these import duties on behalf of the customer in order to ensure smooth customs clearance and delivery. The 15% handling fee is automatically added at checkout, and constitutes full settlement of the customer’s responsibility for US import duties.

3. Checkout with PayPal

You can complete the payment immediately. But you have to pay temporary shipping fee.

4. About Shipping method

We use two shipping carriers:

  1. EMS – Delivered by national/public postal services in each country. Operated by postal networks worldwide, it runs year-round without holidays (depending on the country).
  2. FedEx – A private company. Has many holidays.

⚠️The low-cost small packet service is suspended due to the impact of COVID-19.
⚠️We do not have a contract with DHL, so we cannot ship via DHL.

We will send to the following countries by EMS

  • South Korea
  • China
  • Taiwan
  • Australia*
  • New zealand*

*Australia and New Zealand can be shipped by FedEx, but it is very expensive.

We will send to the following countries by FedEx only

These countries do not accept EMS.

  • Israel
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Georgia
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Moldova

We will send to the following countries by FedEx or EMS

  • United States/Canada
  • Europe
  • Asia (excluding China, South Korea, and Taiwan)
  • Mexico
  • middle east
  • Central and South America
  • Africa

Customers from the above countries can select a shipping carrier on the cart screen.
If you choose FedEx or EMS, our company will decide which one to use.
As a general rule, we will ship via FedEx, but since FedEx has frequent holidays, we will use EMS when FedEx is unavailable.

For customers in the United States, EMS tends to be relatively expensive, so we recommend selecting FedEx.

We cannot send to the following countries.

  • Belarus
  • Russia

About large luggage

Very large items, such as landing nets and tackle boxes(Bakkan), may be sent via EMS instead of FedEx. EMS charges prices using weight only.
FedEx charges based on weight and box size. Therefore, if the cardboard box is very large, FedEx is often twice as expensive.

4-2:About FedEex

The price of FedEx varies in detail depending on distance, box size, and box weight.

Approximate prices are as follows

  • FedEx box or pack, up to 500g weight, about 2800-3000 yen
  • FedEx box or pack, weighing around 1Kg, about 4000 yen
  • For a 2-piece rod for area trout, the shipping cost is about 6,000 yen.
  • RodioCraft's Yellow Wolf rod has a closing dimension of 130cm. In that case, please note that the FedEx fee will jump to around 13,000 yen.

Even if you buy several tens of thousands of yen worth of small plugs and spoons for area trout, the shipping cost is around 3000 yen. 90% of our European area trout customers are within 3000 yen for shipping.

Soft plastic lures for bass fishing are heavier and therefore a little more expensive.

However, please note that Shipping charges will jump for large, heavy items such as buckets and landing nets. Tackle bags cost about 30,000 yen for shipping to Europe. Note that even small tackle boxes can be heavy if you buy a lot of them.

All customers need to give us your phone number.

Please note: FedEx does not work on Saturdays, Sundays and Japan public holidays. Therefore, Your luggage may not move in my store for several days after you receive your truck number.

NEW!Check our real FedEx shipping records (2024–2025)

In addition to the approximate prices above, you can browse our actual FedEx shipping records by country. This tool shows real data from the past 12 months—no estimates.

How to read the records

  • Shipped = the day FedEx actually picked up the parcel from our store.
  • Delivered = the day the parcel was delivered to the customer.
  • Transit days = Delivered − Shipped.
  • Box size:
    • If it says FedEx Box or FedEx Pak, that’s an official FedEx package (no size shown).
    • Our own boxes are shown as H×W×L cm (e.g., 3×21×28 cm).
    • Fishing rods: when the box shows FedEx Tube or the length exceeds 100 cm, it’s a rod shipment.
  • Fee (JPY) is displayed rounded up to the nearest ¥100 for clarity.

Important notes

  • After we email your tracking number, there can be a short lag until FedEx picks up the parcel. FedEx does not operate on Saturdays, Sundays, or Japanese national holidays. The records use the pickup day as “Shipped.”
  • Actual charges may vary depending on weight, dimensions, destination, and seasonal factors.

Note

About rod delivery

We send fishing rods in triangular boxes. If the length is up to 100cm and sent by FedEx, we put it in a FedEx tube. Otherwise, we send them in my store's own triangular box.

Occasionally, rods may break during transportation. In that case, the shipping company will guarantee the amount up to the declared amount written on the slip. As soon as you receive the rod, check the contents and report any damage to the carrier.

If the bag of rods is thin, up to three rods can be sent at a time. However, if the case is ridiculously luxurious, such as the one from RodioCraft, only one rod will fit.

Since it will be sent in a box shaped like this, I would like you not to buy lures or fishing lines with it if possible. Because it's so difficult to pack.

FAQ

Important Please read this FAQ carefully before contacting us.
Questions already answered here may not receive a reply.

💬 EMS tracking says “stopped in Tokyo”, so please check it.

Tracking example

Most frequent question

Do nothing.

This status means your package has already left Japan. It is NOT in Japan.

In Italy especially, it is common for tracking to show no updates for 14+ days during domestic transport or customs processes.

Once a package leaves Japan, we cannot contact Japan Post or FedEx on your behalf.

If your package is stopped in this status, please contact your local post office / courier in your country.

Final Please do not contact us about this tracking status.

💬 Is Proshop Otsuka a real store?

Yes. We operate 7 physical stores in the Kanto region of Japan. Proshop Otsuka was founded in 1998 by professional angler Shigeru Otsuka.

💬 How long have you been in business?

Our retail stores started in 1998, and our online shop opened in 1999 as one of Japan’s first bass-tackle e-commerce sites. That’s why we could secure the domain bass.co.jp. In Japan, a .co.jp domain can be obtained only by a registered corporation.

💬 Do you really ship worldwide?

Yes. We have shipped internationally for nearly 20 years. As of Aug 2025, we have served 13,750 overseas customers across 95 countries.

💬 How many items are available online?

About 20,000 unique SKUs for bass tackle, 15,000 for trout tackle, and over 80,000 fishing items in total.

💬 Why do overseas anglers trust Proshop Otsuka?

Every item listed on our website is actually in stock at our physical stores. Unlike shops that list unavailable items and order them after receiving purchases, we only sell what we physically have—backed by 25+ years of history.

💬 Which payment methods are accepted?

PayPal only. We do not accept credit cards, bank transfers, or other payment methods.

Final This policy is final.

💬 Is it possible to order by e-mail?

No. We cannot accept orders by email. Please place your order using our website cart system.

💬 I bought a lot. Can you discount?

No. We do not offer discounts to any customers.

💬 I want to buy products not on the site.

We basically sell in-stock items listed on our website. If you need special requests, please see special orders.

💬 Please let me know the next arrival time of xxxxxx.

We sell in-stock items only and do not have accurate arrival schedules for every product.

Final Please do not ask for individual arrival forecasts.

💬 Do you provide tracking numbers for every order?

Yes. Once your package is shipped, we email a FedEx or EMS tracking number.

💬 When will it ship?

Normally within 2–5 business days after payment.

Final Please do not ask “when exactly” your order will ship.

💬 How many rods can be sent at once?

Usually up to 2–3 rods per box, depending on length and packaging requirements.

💬 It is displayed as free shipping. Do I need to pay a shipping fee?

Yes. Free shipping applies only within Japan. International orders require shipping fees.

💬 Are there brands you cannot export?

Yes. Due to contracts with manufacturers, we cannot export certain brands such as SHIMANO and Megabass.

Final This restriction is not negotiable.

💬 What languages does customer support handle?

We can handle inquiries in any language using translation tools .

💬 Shipping Costs: Why is it more expensive than expected?

We do NOT overcharge for shipping.

Shipping fees are set by FedEx and EMS (Japan Post).

We may add a small box fee (around 100 JPY) because special custom-made boxes can cost several hundred yen. That’s it.

EMS Shipping Fees

⚪ EMS fees depend on weight and destination.

⚪ The price is fixed for all companies using EMS.

EMS Price List

FedEx Shipping Fees

⚪ FedEx fees depend on box size, weight, and destination.

⚪ Prices are revised slightly every January.

⚪ Discounts vary by store, so shipping costs may be different from other stores.

⚪ If shipping was cheaper at another store, that is due to their discount, not because we overcharge.

⚪ Some areas are classified by FedEx as “Remote Areas”. In such cases, FedEx adds a high extra fee.

Other stores offer free shipping!!!

⚪ That is their business strategy.

⚪ We do not match other stores’ shipping prices.

⚪ If we offered free international shipping, we would go bankrupt.

Large Items & FedEx Pricing

⚪ Tackle bags, rods, clothing, landing nets → Large boxes = higher FedEx costs

⚪ 3-piece or 4-piece rods → If longer than 120 cm, FedEx charges extra.

Final Note

✅ We do not overcharge for shipping.

✅ We do not charge extra handling or packaging fees.

✅ The only additional costs are small box fees and rounding adjustments (less than 200 JPY total).

Final No exceptions.

💬 How to check if your address is in a FedEx Remote Area

Some destinations are classified by FedEx as “Remote Areas”. In such cases, an additional fee will be charged, even if the country is geographically close (e.g. Italy vs. Bosnia).

You can check this yourself using the official ZIP code list provided by FedEx.

👉 Download the FedEx Remote Area ZIP Code List (PDF)

How to use:

If you are not sure, please contact your local FedEx customer service and ask:
“Is this ZIP code considered a Remote Area?”

💬 Do I need to pay customs duty, VAT, or import tax?

Yes, in most countries.

All customs duties, VAT, import taxes, and clearance fees are determined solely by the laws of your country.

Final The buyer is responsible for all import charges.

💬 Can you tell me how much customs duty / VAT I will pay?

No. Customs rules, tax rates, thresholds, and exemptions differ by country and change frequently.

Please follow your country’s import rules.

💬 Can you help me pay customs charges or explain how to pay them?

No.

Customs clearance is a domestic matter of your country.

We cannot intervene or advise, and we do not know payment methods, deadlines, or procedures in your country.

Please contact your local customs office or courier.

Final We cannot interfere with internal procedures of your country.

💬 My package is held by customs. Can you contact them?

No. Once the package enters your country, it is under the authority of your customs and courier.

Final Please contact your courier / customs directly.

💬 EU customers: Do you collect VAT using IOSS at checkout?

No. We do not use IOSS, and we do not collect EU VAT at checkout.

When your order arrives in the EU, VAT (and any applicable import fees) will be collected by your courier / customs according to your country’s rules.

Final We cannot reduce, refund, or negotiate EU VAT / import charges.

💬 What happens if I refuse to pay customs duties or VAT?

Please do not refuse payment.

If you refuse to pay customs duties or VAT, the courier may temporarily charge those costs to our store as the shipper in order to release or process the shipment.

In such cases, very high additional fees and penalties are often added by the courier or customs. If this happens, we will have no choice but to invoice you for the full amount, including:

We do not want to be involved in such a situation, and we will not absorb these costs.

Important Please pay customs duties and VAT when requested by your courier.

Final Refusing customs payment only creates unnecessary problems and additional costs for everyone.

💬 Can you change the declared value, mark the shipment as a gift, or split the invoice?

No. Absolutely not.

Under Japanese law and international customs regulations, all international shipments must be declared at the full and actual transaction value. We strictly comply with these laws.

We do not change declared values, reduce amounts, split values, or mark shipments as “gift”, “sample”, or any similar description — without exception.

There are no exceptions and no room for negotiation. Requests of this nature will not be accepted.

Important Please do not email or contact us with requests to alter customs declarations. Such requests cannot be discussed or approved.

Final If you cannot accept this policy, please do not place an order.

💬 Where do I register my address?

You do not need to register it with us. We ship to the address registered in your PayPal account.

💬 My package arrived. However, there were missing items.

We check orders multiple times before shipment. However, in the unlikely event that items are missing, please contact overseas@bass.co.jp.

Important Please do not open a PayPal dispute. A dispute will freeze the payment and delay resolution.

💬 Do overseas customers have rod warranty or insurance?

No. Warranty and insurance do not apply outside Japan.

💬 One-piece rod broke. I want to repair.

One-piece rods cannot be repaired. You must replace it with a new rod.

Any shipping costs (and any related costs) are the buyer’s responsibility.

💬 My two-piece rod has broken. I want to repair.

Overseas warranty does not apply. A broken rod cannot be repaired like new; it will be replaced with a new section (if available).

If the tip section is broken, you must send both the tip section and the butt section to our store.

Repair flow:
(1) You ship the rod section(s) to our store
(2) We send them to the manufacturer
(3) The manufacturer adjusts the connection between butt and new tip section
(4) The manufacturer sends the parts back to our store
(5) We ship them back to you

Important notes:

💬 I would like to purchase reel parts.

Parts sales are not profitable for our shop and are provided mainly for customers who purchased from us.

If you pay a 1,000 JPY service fee, we may be able to order parts from the manufacturer (if available).

Final Notice
By placing an order, you agree to all conditions above.
If you are not comfortable with international shipping costs, delivery delays, or import charges in your country, please do not place an order.

Please enjoy shopping with us
