KAHARA JAPAN’s Blackmaria KARI-BUTO JAPAN is a high-density, backsiding-style soft bait developed for targeting heavy cover. Its body design is inspired by the movements of shrimp and gobies encountered from the post-spawn period through the tough conditions of midsummer. It measures 4.3 inches in length and weighs 11.8 g. Deep slits are incorporated into the body to reduce missed hooksets caused by the thick body design commonly found in high-density soft baits.

When rigged with an offset hook from the head end and fished weightless, it produces a backsiding action, slowly falling while gliding backward. The fall speed is set on the slower side; if you want it to sink faster, you can use a larger hook or add a nail sinker to adjust the fall rate. For backsiding, offset hooks in sizes 3/0 to 6/0 are a suitable guideline. With a Texas rig, it can be used without pegging the sinker to target a free fall after the sinker reaches the bottom. When rigged with an offset hook from the tail end on a heavy Carolina rig, a strong jerk with a sinker weighing around 1/2 oz produces a darting action.
