The SUM POPPER injection from sumlures is a topwater plug developed to reproduce, in an injection-molded model, the controllability and wide range of actions of the original SUM POPPER handmade by Yamaoka Sum. Instead of the conventional recessed cup around the line eye, it features a flat, shaved-down “Quarter Pipe” shape. This structure allows for reduced injection-molding and coating requirements, while giving the cup edge a sharp finish.
This water-catching surface produces a bubble-churning pop action and splashes, while also responding to walking-the-dog movements and dives over short distances. With light rod work, it is easy to create a popping action. With a stiffer rod combined with low-stretch PE line and a nylon leader, it can also be worked with short, fast pulls to throw splashes. During a straight retrieve, it produces a wobbling action beneath the surface, allowing it to be used not only for topwater presentations but also for covering the surface layer with a retrieve.
It measures 74 mm in length and weighs 10.5 g, and comes standard with #6 treble hooks. Treble hooks are generally best suited to maintaining the lure’s body balance during movement, but they can also be replaced with single hooks. It also accommodates weight tuning as needed, including attaching weight to the tail section to adjust the lure to a more upright floating posture. A snap is recommended for connecting the lure, and nylon is recommended for the leader.
