Heddon’s Slopenose traces its roots back to the “Dowagiac Perfect Surface Casting Bait,” introduced in 1902. Its distinctive appearance, featuring a metal ring at the front, earned it the Slopenose name even at the time. The current model, reissued as the X0200, retains the classic design while offering a versatile setup for multiple topwater presentations.
Its primary action is a walk-the-dog style retrieve, sliding the lure from side to side through rod manipulation and controlled line slack. It can also be used like a popper, chugger, or stickbait, supporting not only continuous head-turning action but also a subtler presentation in which the lure travels mostly straight while only the head swings from side to side. Depending on the conditions, anglers can vary the retrieve with tighter head movements that limit forward travel or a more deliberate cadence incorporating pauses.
