Gamakatsu Spatt

Gamakatsu’s SPATT MR-65 is a long-lip minnow designed to transition quickly into action from the start of the retrieve and produce sharp, precise darts when twitched, thanks to its thin “knife-edge lip.” By making the lip extremely thin, it delivers a highly responsive water-gripping action, with a more pronounced wobble than roll. It swims steadily from dead-slow to fast retrieves, triggering bites with changes in action at the start of the retrieve and its strong appeal. It measures 65 mm in length and weighs 5.8 g in the floating model and 6.3 g in the suspending model. Its wire-through construction, secured at the front of the body, also provides added strength to compensate for the durability concerns often associated with thin lips.

The basic technique is a steady retrieve, while it can also be used by creating a pause after sharp twitches and darts, allowing the lure to remain nearly stationary rather than continuing to move on momentum. With 4–7 lb fluorocarbon and a cast of approximately 25 m, the suspending model reaches an indicative depth of 1.6–2.0 m, while the floating model runs at approximately 1.5–1.9 m. When dragged with approximately 30 m of line extended and twitched, it can dive to around 4 m and is also suitable for Carolina-rigged shad applications. The lip and body shape make it easy to run tightly along cover, while the floating model can be worked free from obstacles using a riser technique that takes advantage of its high buoyancy. The tail is designed with extra thickness, and it comes standard with No. 10 T.G.W Treble RB-M hooks.
