Imakatsu’s KOMINAMI GILLPOP is a jointed lure that combines elements of a popper and a bluegill-shaped jerkbait, allowing anglers to switch between multiple actions from the surface to just below the surface. It measures 120 mm in length and weighs approximately 1.6 oz. The popper-style head is designed to generate popping sounds and splashes with its upper half, while the smaller cup on the lower half reduces water resistance and allows the lure to dive and dart from side to side. With its joint positioned toward the rear, the body produces a wide-sliding dart action underwater as well as a walk-the-dog action with limited forward travel.
A large rattle weight is built into the body. As the lure rises after a dive, the weight strikes the inner body wall, producing “clicking” and “snapping” sounds. The large, flat body amplifies the rattle sound, while its construction allows the rattle to move easily from side to side even with slight wave action, keeping the sound going during pauses. The basic retrieve is to pause for at least five seconds after casting, give the lure a light pop to create a splash, then make three to four consecutive jerks. Repeat the sequence by darting the lure 20–30 cm below the surface, followed by a pause that allows it to rise. The weight section can be fitted with a Feco-compatible blade hanger, and inserting nail sinkers into the hook holes allows anglers to adjust casting distance and the lure’s floating posture. Recommended tackle consists of a baitcasting rod with an MH to H power rating and 14–16 lb fluorocarbon line.
